Jomon Sugi

If we talk about Yakushima, we can’t help but also talk about the Jomon Sugi.

The Jomon Sugi is a giant Japanese cedar tree (Cryptomeria tree), believed to be between 2000 and 7000 years old.

「屋久島」と言えば、「縄文杉」です。「縄文杉」は、樹齢2000年から7000年といわれる巨大な屋久杉です。

Every year, around ten thousand people from all over the country come and take part of an 8-10 hours hike, to be able to reach the considered to be the oldest tree in Japan.

日本最古とも言われるこの木を訪れるために、毎年全国から何万人もの人々がやってきて、8時間から10時間もかかるトレッキングに参加します。

When visiting this 25meters tall Yakusugi, which has survived countless natural disasters and the human hand, you can’t help but wonder what kind of stories it must hide.
