Cicadas

In Japan, we feel summer is finally here when we hear the cicada’s cry.

日本では、セミの鳴き声を聞くと、いよいよ夏が来た！と感じます。

Cicada – クマゼミ

This cicada found in a Tankan tree in Yakushima Senvus Village is called Kumazemi (bear cicada), because of its huge body, and it is usually found in subtropical areas.

このセミは、屋久島センバスビレッジにあるタンカンの木で見つけました。体が大きいことから「クマゼミ」と呼ばれ、亜熱帯地方に生息しています。

There are around 35 species of cicadas in Japan, and their cry differs from one another. The words used to describe their singing changes according to the species and the region of Japan.

For example, this Kumazemi is said to cry “shashasha” in some parts of Japan, but “washiwashiwashi” in Kyushu.

日本には約35種類のセミがいて、鳴き声もいろいろです。その鳴き声は、日本の地域やセミの種類によって、表す言葉も違います。例えば、この「クマゼミ」は、日本の一部では「シャシャシャ」と鳴く、と言われますが、九州地方では「ワシワシワシ」と鳴く、と言われています。
