Luffa
This is a Luffa, a vine plant native to South and Southeast Asia.
これは、南アジア～東南アジア原産のつる性植物、「ヘチマ」です。
The young fruit is eaten as a vegetable, and there is actually a lot of ways to eat it in the South of Japan, as well as other countries of the area.
But the fully ripened fruit is actually inedible, and is used as the sponge we all think of when hearing the word luffa.
若い果実は野菜として食べられていて、実際、南日本やアジアの他の国々でも、いろいろな食べ方があります。
しかし完熟した実は食べられないため、「ヘチマ」という言葉を聞くと、多くの人が「タワシ」を思い浮かべます。
The vine is also commonly planted in the south of Japan to produce a natural “green curtain” to be guarded from the sun.
南日本では、太陽の日差しを遮る自然の「グリーンカーテン」としてよく植えられています。
Next time you visit Yakushima Senvus Village, you might see a “green curtain” made of Luffa!
