Tasty Smell under the Starry Sky | 星空の下の香ばしい匂い

Under the star-filled winter sky in Yakushima, we enjoyed outdoor sweet potato roasting.
屋久島の、冬の満天の星の下で、焼き芋を楽しみました。

Sweet potato is a very familiar food for people in Yakushima.
さつまいもは、屋久島の人にとって非常になじみ深い食材です。

It is said that sweet potatoes came to Satsuma (Kagoshima prefecture) from China around 1600, so it is called “satsuma-imo” in Japan.
さつまいもは1600年頃に中国から薩摩藩（今の鹿児島県）に伝わったと考えられており、日本では「薩摩芋（さつまいも）」と呼ばれています。

The anno-imo sweet potato, famous for its extraordinary sweetness, is said to have come first to Tanegashima, right next to Yakushima.
中でも、特に甘味が強いことで人気の「安納芋（あんのういも）」は、屋久島の隣の種子島に最初に伝わったと言われています。

People in Yakushima might have enjoyed the sweetness of anno-imo a little earlier than everyone else.
屋久島の人たちも、一足先に安納芋のおいしさを楽しんでいたのかもしれませんね。
