Lilium lancifolium

Another beautiful flower you can find at Yakushima Senvus Village is the Lilium lancifolium.
In English, it is known as the Tiger Lily, because its orange petals with black or dark brown dots resembles the skin of a tiger.

In Japanese, it is known as Oniyuri (Ogre Lily), since the shape of the flower reminds of a red ogre.

(Oniyuri)

This type of Lily it's native to Japan, China, Korean Peninsula and far east Russia. The stem can grow up to 150cm, and the faintly scented flower blooms every year from June to July.

(Koniyuri)

You can see these beautiful flowers while taking a walk around our Jomon Rice paddies. ^^

*Oniyuri and Koniyuri belong to the same genus Lilium lancifolium, but Koniyuri grows slightly smaller flowers and doesn't produce bulbils.

Past volunteer

This time I want to introduce to Andrea, from Germany. A volunteer that came two years ago and visited Yakushima Senvus Village two times, first during July-August, and then again during November.

She has a very cheerful personality and likes to travel a lot. She travelled through Canada for a year, she volunteered all over Japan and is now travelling through Australia.

She helped us a lot at Yakushima Senvus Village and Yakushima Ohzora High School, and she also went to different KTC Ohzora High School Campuses to share her experience with the students.

We are really grateful to her, and we hope to receive her visit again someday!
Until then, we wish her safe trips ~!

Waterfalls of Yakushima

The Senpiro Waterfall (Senpiro-no-taki) is almost 10km east from Yakushima Senvus Village. It falls into a massive granite valley from approximately 60 meters high. Sometimes, in the mist formed by the crash of the water, you can see a rainbow.

The Ohko Waterfall (Ohko-no-taki) can be found around 20km west from Yakushima Senvus Village.
It's an 88 meters high waterfall, ranked among the Top 100 Best Waterfalls of Japan.

While we can only enjoy Senpiro Waterfall from an observation deck far away, we can get close to the base of the Ohko Waterfall and feel the mist produced by the crash of the water.

They are especially impressive if you see them during or after rainy days, when the water-flow grows.

By visiting these two imposing spots, you can feel the power of nature.

Hoya Carnosa

The Hoya carnosa are finally flowering at Yakushima Senvus Village.

This plant, also known as porcelain flower or wax plant in English, is native to Eastern Asia and Australia. When growing in the wild, they tend to wrap themselves around another tree, in this case the Japanese fig located in the Scented garden.

These flowers are sweetly scented and their color can vary from white to light pink.
In Japanese, the Hoya Carnosa is also called Sakuraran. Sakura (cherry tree) for the pink color of the flower, similar to the cherry tree flower; and Ran (orchid) because the leaves are similar to the orchid leaves.

Since the flowering season is long, I hope to discover some more flowers soon. ^^
