The First Day of Spring | 立春

The changings of plants always tell us the turn of the seasons.
植物の変化は、いつも私たちに季節の移り変わりを教えてくれます。

Since long ago, ume (plum blossom) has been a sign of the coming spring in Japan.
昔から、「梅の花」は日本において春の訪れを知らせるものとされています。

According to Yamato Honzō (Encyclopedia of Japan’s Natural History – 1709), ume was called “the big brother of flowers”, for it blooms earlier than any other flowers.
『大和本草（1709年出版）』によると、梅はほかのどの花よりも早く咲くことから「花兄（かけい）」と呼ばれていました。

The blossoms of ume are very small, but their bright color catches our eyes in the faded winter forests.
梅の花はとても小さいですが、鮮やかな色は色あせた冬の森の中でひときわ目を引きます。
