Tankan season in Yakushima | 屋久島のタンカンの季節

Along with flying fish and mackerel, tankan is one of the most famous specialty products of Yakushima. February is the season for tankan in Yakushima. If you drive around the south of the island at this time of year, you are sure to see large orange orchards, full of tankan being harvested by farmers. Against the blue of the sea, the colors are beautiful and the view breathtaking.

「トビウオ」や「サバ」と並んで、「タンカン」は屋久島の最も有名な特産品の一つです。2月の屋久島は、タンカンの季節です。この時期に島の南部をドライブすると、農家が収穫作業をしている大きなオレンジの果樹園が必ず目に入ります。青い海を背景に、その色彩は美しく、景色は息をのむほどです。 

This year has been remarkable for tankan production due to a lack of typhoons during the summer. Senvus Village alone harvested 2.8 tons of tankan. A record.

今年は夏に台風が少なかったこともあり、タンカンは大豊作でした。「屋久島センバスビレッジ」だけで2.8トンのタンカンを収穫しました。記録的な量です。

Tankan are a specific type of citrus fruit: a cross between a ponkan – which you can find in December on the island – and a navel orange. They were introduced to Kagoshima Prefecture seventy years ago from Taiwan, and are now one of Yakushima’s specialty products. The island is even Japan’s main producer. The subtropical climate of the coast is perfect for growing particularly sweet oranges.

「タンカン」は、柑橘の１種です。12月に屋久島で見ることができる「ポンカン」と、「ネーブルオレンジ」の交配種です。約70年前に台湾から鹿児島県に導入され、現在では屋久島の特産品の一つとなっています。屋久島は日本の主要な生産地でもあります。沿岸部の亜熱帯気候は、特に甘い柑橘を栽培するのに最適です。

If you want to buy some, you can find them at roadside stalls, the famous Mujin Hanbaiju (無人販売所) for ¥200! If the stalls are empty, you can stop by the Pon-tan-kan local market. Around the island you can also find many products made from the tankan: cakes, cookies, juices, sweets and ice creams ! Be sure to try them to have a real taste of Yakushima.

タンカンを購入したい場合は、有名な「無人販売所（路上の売店）」で、200円で買うことができます！もし売店で売り切れの場合は、「ぽん・たん館」の直売所に立ち寄ることもできます。島のあちこちで、タンカンから作られたいろいろな製品が販売されています。ケーキ、クッキー、ジュース、お菓子、アイスクリームなど！屋久島の本物の味を楽しむために、ぜひ試してみてください。
