ヤクシマシャクナゲ Yakushima Rhododendron

Rhododendron Yakushimanum

On the stretch of the strolling path between Ancient Path of Moss and Waterfall from a Clear Stream, communities of Rhododendron Yakushimanum bloom with graceful and attractive scarlet/pink flowers around May or June each year.
Bringing back the buds of this native species and distributing them to relatives constituted part of Yakushima Island’s takemairi rituals based on the worshipping of mountains, in which a selected few from each settlement paid a visit to the mountains they revered.
